The Cruel Cut – FGM Westminster Hall debate
On Monday 10th March 2014 there was a debate held in Westminster Hall regarding FGM. The debate occurred because our e-petition managed to get over 100,000 signatures...
The debate was chaired by Keith Vaz, the chairman of the Commons Home Affairs Committee and attended by different political figures including Diane Abbot the Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington.
Ms Abbot said “It is a disgrace and a shame that in 2014 we cannot protect those young girls in London and other big cities. We do not need simply consciousness-raising and educational information. We have to face up to the need for prosecution and for routine medical examination. FGM is a practice to which some of the British authorities have turned a blind eye for too long. It is long overdue that we, as a political class, take serious action on FGM.”
